Dear Madam, dear Sir

I have just watched La Tierra y el Territorio – Clave para la paz en Colombia (Soil and Landownership – Key elements of peace in Colombia). It is a documentary funded by SUIPPCOL, the Swiss government programme for the Promotion of Peace in Colombia.

According to the comments at 08:05, Body Shop until September 2010 acquired palm oil from DAABON.

I am shocked to find that Body Shop has been using a supplier responsible for the forced displacement (wasting of drinking water and food, burning down of dwellings) of 123 families from Las Pavas, a small settlement near Río Papayal, Sur de Bolivar, Colombia.
The reason why these hundreds of people have been chased off their ancestral lands is that individuals closely associated with paramilitaries and drug lords appropriated the land for sale to companies producing palm oil from monoculture plantations.

At risk are not only hundreds of individuals – children, adults, old people – but also the incredible biodiversity of the region, indeed the very environment itself – the rivers and near virgin forests that ensure the livelihood of the indigenous population and enable them to sell their produce at the local markets.

I would like to encourage you to stop buying palm oil unless you can give your customers the fullest guarantee that the product has been obtained from sustainable, responsibly managed sources which do not involve the forced displacement of indigenous populations, nor involve the destruction of the natural environment.

I look forward to receiving your comments at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely yours
Margaret Powell-Joss
